The Opportunity:
As a Data Analyst on the Pole Star data team, you will work directly with Product teams and Content teams to provide analytical insights and context for our maritime analytics business operations. Your work will directly support our content strategy through research and analysis of maritime industry trends, vessel tracking insights, and global shipping intelligence while also driving organizational insights through internal analytics dashboards and reporting.
To be successful in this role, you should have strong analytical skills, comfort with data visualization tools and an eagerness to derive actionable insights from maritime data. You should have a passion for maritime research and analytics with the technical skills needed to support both content creation and business intelligence initiatives in the shipping, logistics, and maritime security sectors.
Responsibilities:
Research and analyze maritime industry trends, global shipping patterns, and vessel tracking data to provide context and background information for blog posts and con tent creation
Build and maintain interactive dashboards and reports using Amazon QuickSight for internal stakeholders, focusing on maritime intelligence and vessel performance metrics
Extract, transform, and analyze data from multiple maritime data sources including AIS data, port information, and shipping intelligence to support business decision making
Collaborate with content teams to ensure maritime data-driven insights are incorporated into blog posts, thought leadership content, and marketing materials
Monitor and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) related to vessel tracking, maritime compliance, and shipping analytics
Create self-service analytics solutions to empower other teams with access to maritime intelligence and shipping data insights
Required Skills:
Demonstrated knowledge of the maritime industry, global shipping patterns, and vessel operations is required
Understanding of AIS (Automatic Identification System) data and vessel tracking systems is required
Knowledge of port operations, shipping routes, and global trade patterns is required
3-5 years of data analysis experience, preferably in maritime, logistics, or transportation industries
Experience with data visualization and business intelligence tools, preferably Amazon QuickSight
Proficiency in SQL and experience with relational databases (PostgreSQL preferred)
Strong research and analytical skills with ability to synthesize complex maritime and shipping in formation
Experience with statistical analysis and data interpretation, particularly time series and geospatial data
Proficiency in Python or R for data analysis and manipulation of large maritime datasets
Experience working on end-to-end analytical projects independently
Strong written communication skills for translating maritime data insights into compelling narratives for industry audiences
Experience with AWS data services (S3, RDS, Glue) preferred
Additional Skills: (Nice to have skills which are not mandatory)
Experience in maritime industry content research and fact-checking for industry publications
Familiarity with time series analysis and trend identification for vessel movements and shipping patterns
Experience with A/B testing and experimental design
Strong knowledge of geospatial data analysis and mapping technologies for vessel tracking
Understanding of maritime compliance and sanctions screening processes
Experience with real-time data processing and vessel tracking systems
Knowledge of maritime regulations, IMO standards, and shipping industry best practices
Understanding of web analytics platforms (Google Analytics, etc.)
Experience with data pipeline tools and ETL processes for maritime data integration
Education/Certifications:
Bachelor's degree in Data Science, Statistics, Economics, Maritime Studies, International Trade, or related field
